ELQA Features

What Is ELQA?

The Early Learning Quick Assessments (ELQA) are web-based assessment tools that facilitate formative progress monitoring of early literacy and numeracy skills. The ELQA are developmentally appropriate for children ages three to five and provides teachers detailed data to plan differentiated instruction. Children's early learning skills are assessed at the beginning of the school year and again at intervals throughout the school year so that teachers are able to 1) identify children at risk for not meeting early learning benchmarks, and 2) differentiate instruction to prepare young children to enter kindergarten with the necessary literacy and numeracy skills to benefit from formal school instruction.

The ELQA Literacy Assessment monitors progress in the following essential early literacy skills:

  • Print Concepts
  • Vocabulary
  • Phonological Awareness
  • Alphabet Knowledge

The ELQA Numeracy Assessment monitors progress in the following essential early numeracy skills:

  • Numbers and Operations
  • Displaying and Analyzing Data
  • Geometry
  • Algebraic Thinking
  • Measurement and Data

  • allows examination of child's level/rate in relation to peers;
  • designed to be used repeatedly; and
  • tracks child and program outcomes.

Teachers also use the ELQA individual and classroom reports to:

  • compare class performance to target benchmarks;
  • determine individual children's literacy and numeracy goals;
  • form small groups for planning differentiated instruction;
  • determine which skills to target for whole group instruction;
  • share child's progress during parent-teacher conferences; and
  • include in child's portfolio to document literacy and numeracy development throughout the year.
